At the GLB, tonight’s weekly showcase is their annual “International Stout Bout”, with twelve stouts on tap. From 5 – 9 PM, pints of Guinness, O’Hara’s Celtic Stout, Beamish, Murphy’s, Sinha Stout, Gritty’s Black Fly, Bare Knuckle Stout, Long Trail Coffee Stout, Sebago Lake Trout and Rogue Chocolate Stout will only be $2.50. The two higher octane beers (Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout at 10.6% ABV and Rasputin RIS at 9%) will be $3.50 for a 13.5 oz snifter. As always, the event at the Bear promises to be a ton of fun, with lots of trivia and free giveaways from the bar.
Down in the Old Port, Novare Res is smack-dab in the middle of their “We Love You and Want You to be Happy Fest,” which started on Tuesday. What does this mean for you, the beer drinker? This means high alcohol beer! All the taps at Novare have been switched over to brews with over 9% alcohol by volume, which mean you have 23 “extreme” beers to choose from. There are lots of great options – the full draft list is here, and some particular standouts in my mind are the Dogfish Head 120 Min IPA, Stone Old Guardian, Allagash Curieux, and Kulmbacher Eisbock. While the event should run until sometime next week, I’d suggest getting in early. I’d expect, as is usually the case at Novare, the event will only go “until the taps run dry.”
