How could I not cover this?
In a sign that I may be on to something having a site about beer and books, the Great Lost Bear here in Portland is hosting author John Connelly for a signing and reading. Connelly’s newest book in his Charlie Parker series, The Lovers, comes out on June 2nd, and finds Detective Parker working at the GLB as bar manager (how cool is that?). To celebrate this confluence of literature and libation, Connelly will be at the Bear at 7PM on the 2nd, and will do a reading from the book and sign copies of the new hardcover. Books will be sold at the bar by super-rad local indie Books Etc., and everyone who buys a copy of the book will get a free Great Lost Bear t-shirt. And this isn’t just any t-shirt – it’s a limited edition “Charlie Parker Served Here” piece of wearable memorabilia.
I don’t have a heck of a lot to add, other than this is the kind of event we need more of. As people shift to buying books online and at big box stores, fun and unique events are one of the keys to the survival of independent booksellers. Of course, I’m also fond of anything combining beer and books, and events like this are the first step towards a beer geek book club in Maine like those hosted by Stone and Boundary Bay. If anything, it’s proof I’m not the only one who finds a lot of joy in a great beer in one hand and a great book in the other.
